Apollonia has been the capital of Sifnos since 1836. It consists of 5 villages blended into one and has some spectacular views of Sifnos's neighbouring islands. There are some lovely walks which begin from Apollonia. In the village square there is the folklore museum which is full of traditional potteries, weavings and embroideries. You can wander through the typical Cycladic marble streets lined with shops, churches, restaurants and fine neo-classical buildings.
Kamares, the lively port of Sifnos, is impressively positioned between two mountain ranges. Here the ferries and yachts come and go and every morning the fishing boats unload their catch. There is a long sandy beach with a slow gradient into the sea making it an ideal and safe place for children. In Kamares you can find local potters workshops, pretty waterside restaurants and a friendly relaxing atmosphere. The excellent bus service leaves from Kamares every hour and connects with all the beaches and villages of Sifnos.
Kastro is the picturesque medieval village which was the capital of Sifnos until 1836. It is perched on a dramatic clifftop boasting 600 year old Venetian walls and 16th century churches. The most distinctive houses are built into the wall itself providing a superb example of medieval and traditional Cycladic architecture.
